Join us as we sit down with our very own course developer Chris Martin. With a background similar to some of you, Chirs studied Music Production and Sound Engineering at Surrey University, and whilst at University helped to run a night called Presha, specialising in electronic dance music (house/ techno/ garage etc.).
Now, working here at pointblank as part of the Course Development team, His team’s role is to design what you learn in your modules. This involves everything from coming up with module topics, creating pages on the VLE, creating exercises and downloadable resources, and recording and editing tutorial videos.
This session will be covering sampling in Ableton Live. It’ll start with a quick look at what sampling is and a brief history of sampling, before we dive into Sampling in Ableton. Ableton has three in built Samplers; Simpler, Sampler and Impulse and we’ll take a look at potential applications of each device.
The masterclass will cover basic techniques such as loading and triggering samples and using Drum Racks, as well as sample manipulation techniques such as reversing, filtering, using pitch envelopes and looping. We’ll also cover some creative sound design techniques, such as using Slice to New MIDI Track, Warping and Resampling, to demonstrate how you can manipulate a sample almost beyond recognition.
At the end of the session, you should be more familiar with each of Ableton’s three samplers, and hopefully you will be inspired to get creative with your own sounds and start building your own unique sample library that you can use in your productions.
