Should you need to request an extension, deferral of assessment, or wish to make an academic appeal against a received grade, you may submit an "Requests for Additional Consideration (Extenuating Circumstances) form" or "Academic Appeal".
"Extenuating circumstances" means difficult personal circumstances in your life that affect your ability to meet an assessment deadline or affect your performance in an assessment. Acceptable extenuating circumstances must be evidenced and should be exceptional, serious and outside of your control in order for us to grant an extension or deferral of assessment, or any other supportive assessment adjustment.
1. Difficult circumstances before your term starts
Students with Disabilities and Long-Term Conditions
If your circumstances are long term / ongoing, and you feel they may affect your studies in the upcoming term, it is possible to request a reasonable adjustment for future terms.
There is more information regarding this process on the VLE here: Students with Disabilities and Long-Term Conditions
Ongoing Circumstances
If your circumstances are not long term, however, you feel they may be serious enough to affect your upcoming term you may submit an online Extenuating Circumstances form to request a deferral or extension of assessment up to two weeks before the start of your term.
2. Difficult circumstances during your term
Up until 5 days before your assignment deadline
If you experience extenuating circumstances that impact your coursework, you may request an extension or deferral by submitting an online Requests for Additional Consideration (Extenuating Circumstances) form.
One-Week Extensions (Self-Certification)
You can self-certify for up to 7 days if your circumstances affect your assessment deadline. You must submit the form within 7 days, detailing your situation. This option is limited to twice per academic year and must align with Middlesex University regulations.
Extensions Over One Week & Deferrals
These require exceptional circumstances and supporting evidence. Deferrals are only possible if a future reassessment opportunity exists, and you must apply at least 5 working days before your deadline.
Last-Minute Situations
If you have less than 5 working days before the deadline, submit your work as best as you can. If needed, you can appeal your grade within 21 days of receiving your results. However, if your appeal is rejected and you missed your deadline, you will fail the assessment.
Important Considerations
Deferrals may affect your progression and fees. If approved, you must complete deferred work at the next available assessment, or you will fail the module.
